RealMe login
The ReaMe login service gives users a single username and password for easy access to New Zealand government services that can be used over and over and over.
For agencies that offer or want to offer RealMe login as a gateway to their online services, it is easy to set up.
That means there’s no need to spend time and money on developing a login service yourself.
Identity assurance rating
This service offers no identity assurance - RealMe login is an authentication service.
How the service protects personal data
Instead of using the user’s name, RealMe login issues a unique digital pseudonym to protect their identity.
RealMe login can be used in combination with other secure login methods, including second factor authentication or code by text.
Use of the service
RealMe continues to be an important government service used by more than a million New Zealanders.
Annual figures show the service clocks up more than three million RealMe logins every month.
Technical requirements to integrate with the service
This service is available to New Zealand government agencies only.
Integrating with the RealMe login servce requires a SAMLv2.0 messaging component or use of the OpenID Connect (OIDC) protocol.
For a SAMLV2.0 integration, there are two SSL certificates required, one for test and one for production.
We encourage government agencies to contact the RealMe team to discuss integration with the service.

Creating a RealMe login
Creating a RealMe login takes a few minutes by visiting the government website the user wants to access and then entering an email address, creating a username and strong password and answering a couple of security questions.
The service authenticates the user when they use the service to log into a website for the first time and then recognises the returning user each time they return to that site.
